mornings
I have begun my morning practice again.
Circa 2012 I had a kick ass morning practice going. Then I got a new job, that I love but is demanding. At the same time I also got a new boyfriend that I really love, who is now my husband. The last two years have been a blur of some pretty outstanding things, but in the process I stopped my morning practice and haven’t really ever re-started it.
Until now.
It starts like this:
5 min yoga (moving in general)
5 min reading (something insightful and positive)
5 min writing in a jounal
3 min meditation
18 min
You can do it too. It is only getting up roughly 15 min earlier, or designating 18 min you are already up to these tasks. If you are like me 5 days ago, I would lay in bed for about 25 min reading email, checking facebook/twitter/instagram, reading the news and the weather before getting out of bed and rushing to the shower.
The morning practice (at first) really doesn’t have to be pretty at all. The last two days I have had my hair pretty mangled, I am in my pajamas on my mat slowly creeking through some cat/cow postures with bad breath.
The point is that I made it to the mat, that I opened that book and read 1.5 pages more than I did yesterday and that I closed my eyes and cleared my head ***before*** checking my email or Faceboook. That’s the important part of this, start your day by filling yourself with things of your own choosing before the rest of the world doesn’t give you the choice. Fill yourself with mental and spiritual vitamins to keep you going. Then by the time (only roughly 15 min later) you see that crazy work email you are in a space to deal with it that isn’t just reactionary. You don’t have to be a “morning person” to do this. Email me if you need suggestions on postures, reading or meditation apps, susan@hohmyoga.com.
Everyone can do it. No time like the present, set your alarm right now.
